Hamster Cheek Pouch Problems: How to Check
It can be alarming to see one of your hamster's cheeks staying puffed up, or the cheek pouch looking turned inside-out. Most of the time it's simply food storage in progress, but it's occasionally a real problem, so it's good to know how to tell them apart.
Normal situations
- One or both cheeks are puffy because food is stored in the pouches — this usually empties within a few hours to a day.
- Cheeks going flat right after food is moved to the nest/house.
Situations that could be a warning sign
- The cheek hasn't emptied for several days: sometimes food hardens or gets stuck inside the pouch and won't come out.
- The cheek pouch turns inside out and comes out (prolapse): if red, moist tissue is visible outside the mouth, that's an emergency.
- Only one side stays swollen and hurts when touched: an abscess or tumor can't be ruled out either.
What to check at home
- Think back on whether anything sticky or sharp (like nut shells) was in the food fed recently.
- Watch whether the cheek stays full for more than a day.
- Check whether they show sharp pain or try to avoid being touched there.
When to see a vet
Cheek pouch prolapse (tissue turned inside-out and protruding) needs an immediate vet visit with no home treatment attempted. Beyond that, if the cheek stays full for more than a day, or there's a clear pain response to touch, it's safer to have an exotic vet check it out.
